Job Description

Job Specifications

The Research Fellow will:
Work as a member of SSRC team under the direction of the Director of the Centre and in support of the Chair in Old Age Financial Protection.

Work in collaboration with other members of the Centre and the staff of the University, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and similar institutions. The scope of duties and responsibilities extends beyond the assigned research topic to include identifying resources, facilitating accessibility and supporting collaboration with other designated agencies in pursuit of the objectives of the Centre.

Participate in or undertake to lead a specified research program that includes stock-taking exercises to map the landscape on social security, literature surveys, data analysis and hypothesis testing based on data from Malaysian institutions, including national and regional policy reviews and designs.

Contribute periodically to the social security literature with single or co-authored articles in reviewed and rated academic and policy journals.

Assist Malaysian public institutions in the implementation of their social security research programs.

Participate in externally financed research projects on social security issues, as directed by Centre.

Participate as resource person on Centre-led events including workshops, conferences, and seminars.

selection Criteria

Education and Experience

The candidate is expected to hold a master degree or equivalent in a relevant area (economics, public policy, sociology, etc); having a Ph.D. is an advantage.

For the position of a junior research fellow prior research experience is not a prerequisite.

For the position of a senior research fellow at least 5 years of research experience is required.

Technical skills:
Good understanding of the analytical and empirical instruments of social security.

Knowledge and experience on data bases (such as household surveys, census data, labour force surveys and other data sets)

Knowledge and experience with STATA and other statistical packages is an advantage. Willingness to learn these instruments is required.

Communication skills:
Good oral and written communication skills in English is mandatory.

The ability to work and collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cross-cultures across institutional boundaries.

Terms of Contract

Starting Date: Immediately

Duration of contract: One year with the possibility of renewal of contract based on satisfactory performance evaluation.

Termination of Service

SSRC reserve the right to terminate the appointment by giving thirty (30) days’ notice in writing or paying an equivalent of one (1) month’s salary in lieu of such notice.

Terms and Conditions of Employment

The Research Fellow shall not accept any other appointment, or engage in private practice, professional work or employment or unpaid work or receive commission or fees in other organizations or institutions in Malaysia without the prior written permission of the appropriate University authority and the Malaysian Immigration Authority. However, the research fellow can avail to research grants provided by SSRC or OAFPC to carry out the research or study.
